Most Allegan County Recycling programs depend on a partnership between county and local government. Through the auspices of Michigan's Urban Cooperation Act the county has negotiated interlocal agreements with 21 cities and townships regarding the collection and management of funds for waste reduction efforts. Agreements are renegotiated at 5 year intervals.
Under this arrangement, local units can assess an annual per household, recycling fee. After paying these fees residents receive Resource Recovery identification cards, which are used to drop off appliances, tires and household batteries at one of the county's monitored recycling depots and allow participation in the household hazardous waste collection program. Recycling fees also fund curbside recycling programs and drop-off sites throughout the county.
New Items can be recycled! Resource recovery managed programs now accept clear, green and brown glass, as well as many more types of plastic containers. Drop-off sites services by Allied Waste accept household batteries ( no vehicle batteries, please ). Place batteries in zip-lock bags and deposit them in the commingled container collection bin.
