NOTE: the processing of a Permit may take up to three (3) business days.

Obtain a License to Purchase Permit from:

Persons requesting a License to Purchase Firearm must pass a Universal background check (Federal and State).

MCL 28.422 - License To Purchase - LTP 

  • Requires LTP for any Firearm Purchase. Pistol or Non-Pistol. (Non-Pistol - defined as a firearm greater than 26 inches in length {ex. shotgun or rifle}). 
  • EXCEPTIONS: CPL/MCOLES (Active)/FFL. 
    • Purchasing a Rifle/Shotgun from an FFL.
  • NO CPL/MCOLES (Active)/FFL = REQUIRED to get LTP to buy a pistol from an FFL.

NOTE: Handguns are no longer to be brought into the Sheriff’s Office.

Requirement of Seller: 

  • Complete LTP.
  • Provide completed copy to purchaser. 
  • If Pistol Sales - Return LTP to Licensing Authority within 10 days. 
  • If non-pistol Sales - No requirement to return to Licensing Authority.

In order to correctly register the handgun, it is important that the information supplied be complete, legible, and correct; if not, the record will be returned to you, resulting in the handgun not being registered until a corrected copy or new copy is returned.

If the Pistol Sales Record is correctly filled out, the handgun will then be entered and officially registered to the purchaser.

NOTE: you will NOT receive a confirmation from our office if your handgun is successfully registered. 

If you are a CPL Holder/MCOLES/FFL:

  • Seller completes the Firearm Sales Record (RI-060)
  • Provides copy to purchaser.
  • Pistol - Forward FSR to local police or sheriff where the seller resides. 
  • Non-Pistol (Over 26" - Rifle/Shotgun) - do not forward to L/E.

Dropping at the Drop Box: located in the entry way of the Sheriff’s Office (the entry way is open 24/7).

NOTE: it is important to send in the “Licensing Authority Copy” to the Sheriff’s Office. The “Licensing Authority Copy” contains information that the other copies (purchaser and seller) do not contain.
