Snowmobile Safety

As weather conditions allow, deputies patrol and monitor snowmobile trails throughout Allegan County. Snowmobiles, much like other motor vehicles, must be registered with the State. For those operating snowmobiles on public land, an annual Snowmobile Trail Permit must be displayed on the machine. Snowmobile safety classes are also offered by the Sheriff's Office in January to allow students to earn their snowmobile safety certificate.

No Classes are scheduled at this time.

Those who complete the class will be awarded a snowmobile safety certificate.

Classes are designed for people of all ages who are interested in safe snowmobiling, but Snowmobile Safety Certificates are required for persons 12-16 years of age who wish to operate a snowmobile.

Who should take this course?
People who need a Snowmobile Safety Certificate, and people of all ages who are interested in safe snowmobiling. A Snowmobile Safety Certificate is required for persons 12-16 years of age who wish to operate a snowmobile.

According to the DNR publication Michigan Snowmobile Safety & You:
- A person, under the age of 12:
  - may not operate a snowmobile without the direct supervision of the parent or guardian except on property owned or controlled by the parent
  - may not cross a highway or street
- A person who is at least 12 but less than 17 years of age:
  - may operate a snowmobile under direct supervision of a person 21 years of age or older, or have in their immediate possession a valid snowmobile safety certificate
  - may not cross a highway or street without having a valid snowmobile safety certificate in their immediate possession
How long is the class?
The class typically runs 6-8 hours.
How much does it cost?
There is no cost, but pre-registration is required.
