Home MenuAdoption Process
The Allegan County Animal Shelter seeks to help pets find their forever homes. Our goal is that each animal we help to place is lovingly cared for until the end of his or her life. Owning a pet is a big responsibility and we work to help potential pet owners understand the commitment, and to match the right pet for the person. The adoption process, helps prevent animals from returning back to the shelter, and happy outcomes for all! Thank you for your patience and understanding during this process.
The following minimum criteria are required to adopt a pet from the shelter:
- You must be 21 or older and be able to provide an established, stable, home environment.
- You must have a solid history of vetting for any current pets and a positive referral from your veterinarian.
- Any pets in your household must be current on vaccinations, neutered or spayed, and dogs must be licensed.
The next step is an adoption application. The purpose of this application is to gather information about your home, other pets and your general lifestyle to make an initial assessment of whether the pet you wish to adopt is suitable for you and is a good fit for the pet too. Please complete either a dog or cat application (links on the left of page).
Once the application is received, the Adoption team will review and call you if there are any questions about your application. The Adoption team will contact your references and veterinary office. Once they have spoken to your references and Veterinarian, they will match you with the most suitable animal for placement.
If you have questions during the process, please call the shelter at (269) 686-5112 or email to AnimalShelter@allegancounty.org .
Please allow up to 1-3 business days for complete processing of your application. If we do not hear back from your references in a timely fashion, your application can be delayed.
